Raleigh's Hospital Stay

I'm sure most of you have heard by now but Raleigh had a 24 hour hospital stay on Monday/Tuesday. Scariest night of our lives! Completely freightening. He was diagnosed with croup on Monday by his pediatrician and we had started him on a steriod and motrin/tylonol regime. He had a 102.5 temperature that we couldn't break and next thing we knew he was having a febrile seizure. At the time, we didn't realize it was a seizure. We thought it was related to the croup and was some sort of blockage to his airway. We called 911 immediately and by the time they got to our house he was coming out of the seizure.

At the hospital he recieved 3 breathing treatments and a hefty dose of steriods to help reduce the inflamation to his windpipe and bronchials. They observed him until 6pm the next day and we were cleared to go home. Apparently, febrile seizures are quite common (though ridiculously freightening and scary). 1 out of every 6 children have them and now that he has had one, he has a 30% chance of having another. If he does have a second one, he has a 50% chance of having a third and so on and so on. They usually outgrow them by 6 years of age.

Every day he has been getting a little bit better. He still has a nasty cough and is recieving motrin and tylonol every 4-6 hours. We just finished his last dose of steroids this morning. Hopefully he can return to daycare on Monday 100% healthy. Other than that, we are just thrilled that this brief illness wasn't something more serious. I am certainly cherishing every day like I never had before! Something like this puts your life in perspective. Just hoping I'll be able to sleep again one day! :)
